Miles for Peace

THE STORY:

On May 16th, Global Mike Reid (“Mikey Beans” at Camp), Seeds of Peace counselor from 2015 to 2016, will embark on a journey of epic proportions taking him and his Icelandic co-pilot, Sigríður Ýr Unnarsdóttir (Sigga), on a 7000 mile (over 11,000 km) journey by motorcycle across the vast expanse of America. This odyssey will take them from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back again, allowing them to visit some of America’s most beautiful and iconic sites such as: Route 66, Zion National Park, Death Valley, Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, Yosemite National Park, Bonneville Salt Flats, Yellowstone, and many others.

ABOUT OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL

In my mind, Seeds of Peace and my thirst for adventure are like peanut butter and jelly, good by themselves but amazing when put together. Here is where ‘Miles for Peace’ was born…

During this journey, I will be snapping photos, blogging about my experiences, reminiscing about my past summer at Seeds, as well as preparing for this upcoming summer. It is my hope, over the course of the journey, to raise $6,000 to finance one scholarship for an international camper to come to camp in 2017. To support this effort and to encourage you all to donate, Sigga and I will be doing wacky things for your entertainment and posting donation goals which can earn you postcards from Hollywood and other places along our journey, among many other cool gifts.

WHY INVOLVE SEEDS?

There are moments in each person’s life when they are gifted with a clear and true sense of purpose. For “Mikey Beans,” this moment was a nearly two month experience last summer called Seeds of Peace summer camp. From the very first day, during the insanity of the welcoming ceremony as the Seeds exited that bus ( I was banging a drum and hopping on one foot due to a broken toe), it struck me that this experience would be unlike anything I had ever been a part of before.

As a first-time counselor I was continually amazed by the ability of Seeds of Peace to attract teenagers from so many competing backgrounds. Through the care of both camp staff and counselors, these teenage Seeds are encouraged to make meaningful steps across, what once was, a strong line of historic division.

Reflecting on my Seeds experience, I came to realize how truly unique and important this opportunity has been for these young leaders and why I would like to help to provide such an experience for more aspiring young peacemakers.

‘Miles for Peace’ is a reflection of my continued commitment to the organization that has changed my life and the lives of so many young leaders. Please consider giving to the cause!

ABOUT SEEDS OF PEACE:

Seeds of Peace inspires and cultivates new generations of global leaders in communities divided by conflict by equipping them with the skills and relationships they need to accelerate social, economic, and political changes essential for peace.

Since 1993, Seeds of Peace has set the standard in international peace-building by providing exceptional young people and educators from regions of conflict with an otherwise impossible opportunity to meet their historic enemies face-to-face at its Camp in Maine.

Seeds of Peace builds on their extraordinary and critical relationships and understanding through year-round local programs that focus on the core leadership capacities needed to advance peace. There are now over 6,000 Seeds of Peace alumni from 27 countries who prove that solutions exist, peace is possible, and there is reason to have hope for a better future.
